Tue TUSK

Tue TUSK makes dance records out of old stories. The working method is unusually literal about it: a myth, a quayside, a tempo, and a rule that the folklore is toasted rather than narrated — nobody on a Tue TUSK record ever stops to explain what a kraken is.

The sound sits at 130 BPM almost without exception. Underneath it is dark, driving deep house; on top of it is dancehall — not as a genre but as a delivery, all patois toasting, gravel and pirate swagger. The combination is the whole signature, and it is not a common one in Copenhagen or anywhere else.

The catalogue runs wider than the sea records suggest. There is French-touch disco house with a Cockney spoken verse, funky house built on a woody double-bass rumble, big-room built around a panflute lead, and — first of all, and least likely — a Santana-style Latin rock wedding singalong that got remixed onto the floor and became the label’s opening release.

Every track is built rather than caught. Elements are generated, locked to a bar grid, assembled against a written structure map, and then measured against the brief that started them: sub-bass present from bar one, section lengths exact to the bar, one element and one element only carrying the low end. If the render disagrees with the brief, the render is wrong.
